Greater Northwest Chimney, Inc., has restored hundreds of chimneys in Western Washington. Below you will find a listing of the types of restorations available.
Tuck Pointing: Tuckpointing is a process used to replace old, soft or crumbly mortar from in between brick, block or stone. Usually performed on exterior masonry structures, the mortar joints are ground out to approximately 1" depth, refilled with spec. mix mortar, and the joints are tooled to match existing joints as close as possible. The structure is then acid washed and waterproofing can be applied.
Fireplace firebox rebuild: The mortar joints between the firebrick in a masonry fireplace opening can become deteriorated over time and the firebrick can crack. While some fireboxes can be repaired, the majority of fireboxes with deteriorated mortar joints and cracked firebrick will require a firebox rebuild. This can usually be accomplished in one day.
The existing firebox walls and floor are removed and hauled away. New walls and a floor are built with firebrick and fireclay mortar and usually a new damper or Top Sealing damper is installed.
Bellfires firebox system: Bellfires is designed to increase the efficiency of a conventional fireplace by as much as 50%, transforming it into a home heater. The Bellfires is a pre-cast modular masonry firebox that retrofits into an existing metal or masonry firebox usually without altering the existing fireplace face. The Bellfires offers a wide range of sizes making an exact retrofit in your existing fireplace, transforming your fireplace into a dependable secondary heat source.
Bellfires is also widely used in new construction for an efficient environmentally positive fireplace design. For more information on this product visit our product page.
Ahrens cast in place lining system: Ahrens Chimney Technique is a system for lining or relining masonry chimneys. Ahrens cast in place lining system is UL listed to 1777 zero clearance standards, approved for all fuel types, comes in many different sizes and has a manufacturers limited lifetime warranty. The Ahrens system is a unique proven masonry liner which is installed only by trained and authorized Ahrens dealers. For more information on Ahrens lining system visit our product page.
Chimney Crowns: Chimney crowns can become cracked and lifted over time due to expansion, contraction and freeze thaw. This can cause an entry for water penetration and deterioration of the chimney and all of it's components.
Earthquake straps: An existing masonry chimney can be taken down to the roofline and earthquake straps (as required by the Universal Building Code) can be bolted into place in the attic area of the home.
Steel reinforcement of existing masonry chimneys: The Universal Building Code requires that new chimneys be constructed with steel reinforcement. Existing masonry chimneys can also be steel reinforced by placing #4 bar steel in each corner of an existing masonry chimney. Ahrens cast in place lining is used to line the flue and hold the steel reinforcement in place. Earthquake straps and steel reinforcement are installed to minimize the movement of a chimney in the event of seismic activity.
