**CHIMNEY FIRES**

Wood fires bring warmth and comfort to our homes. As we sit in front of a crackling fireplace the last thing we are thinking about is the condition of our chimney. However, if we don't give some thought to it before we light that first fire of the season, our enjoyment may quickly end. Because dirty chimneys can cause chimney fires, which damage chimney flue liners and chimneys, destroy homes and injure or even kill people.

Chimney fires can burn explosively, or they can burn quietly without any immediate notice. Flames or dense smoke may shoot from the top of the chimney. With proper chimney system inspection, maintenance and care, chimney fires are preventable.

Following a chimney fire, violent storm, earthquake, flood or lightning strike, have your chimney inspected for damage -- inside and out. This includes checking for cracks and fallen bricks. For safety's sake, DO NOT USE YOUR CHIMNEY until it is checked by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep®.
